About Scheme: The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana was launched by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on May 1, 2016 in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh with the tagline, "Swachh Indhan, Behtar Jeevan",. Under this programme, 5 Cr LPG connections are provided to BPL families with a support of Rs.1600 per connection. The programme has been extended to 8 million poor families instead of 5 million families as originally planned.
In the Union Budget for FY 21-22, provision of additional 1 million LPG connections has been made under PMUY programme. In this phase, migrant families were given a special opportunity.
Objective: The objective of providing clean energy to Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiaries and sustaining the use of LPG was based on three pillars:
- Affordability
- Accessibility
- Adaptability
Beneficiaries of PMUY:
- Beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana- Gramin.
- Identified Households from Socio Economic Caste Census (SECC) List 2011.
- SC/ST Households.
- Forest Dwellers .
- Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY).
- Tea and Ex-Tea Garden Tribes.
- Most Backward Classes (MBC).
- Poor Households as per a 14-point declaration.\
- Residents of Islands/ River Islands.
As on 1st March 2023 there are 9.59 crore PMUY beneficiaries. The total expenditure is Rs.6,100 crore for fiscal year 2022-23 and Rs.7,680 crore for 2023-24. The subsidy will be directly transferred to the bank accounts of eligible beneficiaries. Public sector oil marketing companies, namely Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) have already provided the following subsidy.
